Dr. Matthew Kohler

Matt received his Ph.D. in physics from CU Boulder in 1992. He created practice MCAT questions for a test prep company in California and wrote articles for a popular science magazine before moving to the east coast to teach college. He worked as an adjunct professor at Hofstra University before taking a professorhip at Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts in 1994. In 2001 Matt returned to Boulder and started his two companies, WingSpan Tutoring and CrushTheTest SAT/ACT Prep.

Matt works one-on-one with students in his South Boulder office helping them with SAT/ACT prep, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, physics, and chemistry. Matt is currently developing test-prep materials that allow students to focus intensively on each type of question the test-makers use. Matt is a founding member of Boulder Educational Services, a professional organization for tutors, therapists, and school placement experts. With whatever time is left over, Matt writes and edits technical manuals for high-tech hardware and software.

Matt was a bit of a radical as a college professor because he insisted on an extremely student-centered approach, allowing the class's level of understanding to determine how the material would be covered. Matt's back-and-forth with his students and his respect for them combined with his respect for the course itself (Matt was by no means an easy professor, if you wanted an A you had to earn it) made him one of the most popular teachers in the Bridgewater physics department.

Matt's style is perfect for tutoring where it is crucial to allow the student's level of understanding and the student's goals to guide the process. Matt is easygoing and flexible but never loses sight of the goals set by his students and their families.

Ultimately, of course, learning is up to the student himself or herself. Matt can't force someone to embrace a goal in which they have no interest. Matt is encouraging and is willing to challenge people to think and learn but he does not engage in coercion.
